An Election Prayer

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
To him who existed long before this country was even a clump of dirt
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who will exist long after it is but a memory
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who formed each person, knitting them together in their mother’s womb
for his steadfast love endures forever
All in his image. All invited to join in his family.
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who called each of us to repentance and “Your will, not mine, be done”
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who calls us to follow his word, promising it is for our good even if the world tells us it is not
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who calls us to lay down our life and pick up our cross
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who calls us to die to ourselves and to put on Christ
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who came to die for the sins of Trump
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who came to die for the sins of Biden
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who came to die for the sins of you and me
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who calls us all to accept this gift, to repent and to believe
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who invites us all to be adopted as his children
for his steadfast love endures forever
To him who has promised his children a future Kingdom: a now and not yet
for his steadfast love endures forever

I pray that this truth of love and home will make us humble before our God; That it will lead us to be lovers of mercy and doers of justice this season.

That this truth will keep our heads and our hearts above water, and that it will stir us to compassion and justice and mercy instead of fear.

That this truth will give us the security to consider others as more valuable than ourselves and to put biblical truth ahead of our own self-interest.

I pray that we will remember, that regardless of what happens, whether our dreams are realized or our worst fears…

Our hope is not in this world, where moth and rust and greed and selfishness and pride destroy.
Our hope is kept secure in this future Kingdom.
Where we will dwell in the house of the Lord,
in his steadfast love…
forever.
